Hi I'm Gen. My real name is Genevieve Ann Gonzales. My relatives call me J-Ann but my friends call me Gen. I don't talk much and I prefer to be alone most of the time. I am very close to my family. When I'm not busy, I watch DVD's with my family. I stay home on weekends. I don’t like shopping, it makes me dizzy. I don't like sweet foods like chocolates. But I love to eat fries. Until now, I love to watch cartoons. I love surfing the net like facebook and friendster, to find my long lost friends.

Based on the lesson I took on Christian Spirituality about temperaments, I can classify myself as Melancholic-Phlegmatic because I have melancholic and phlegmatic characteristics. I am more melancholic because I usually have a “dark/gloomy” aura. I don’t smile often and I take everything seriously. When I’m tired, I really don’t smile. When I know someone has a problem, I am also affected though my facial expression doesn’t show it. I am very emotional, simple criticisms can make me cry but I don’t show it to everyone, I cry at home.

I may have a dry sense of humor (melancholic) but I can say witty jokes unintentionally (which makes me phlegmatic). Sometimes, I am afraid to leave my comfort zone.

People who don’t know me well classify me as melancholic

My neighbors think I’m a bit snob, but a good daughter and also a good student. They only see me when I go to school or when I go to a computer shop.

My former classmates from elementary and highschool always tell me I’m pretty and they also think I’m rich. They know I’m not fond of jokes and I don’t want anyone laughing at me, discriminating me or commanding me of what to do. That is why they respect me and they don’t hurt my feelings.

For me, people should treat other people the way they wanted to be treated. It’s a form of sensitivity or “pakikisama”. I don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings because I know how bad it feels.

My professors and schoolmates say I’m nice and very shy. I am known as the most discipline student since elementary but I can also make bad things sometimes. There are times when I argue with my parents and disobey them. I also yell and say bad words when I’m angry.

A good friend classifies me as melancholic-phlegmatic. They know I get angry over simple things. They say I’m a talented person but I don’t show it because I’m afraid to fail. They also know that I always follow rules.

I believe rules are made to maintain peace and order in our life. That’s why I find it unfair when people who follow rules are being misjudged sometimes. Then I realized that no matter what other people say, I still have to do my obligations because it’s the right thing to do.

However, it’s really hard for me to trust other people. I realized that there are people who do not deserve my trust. Based on my chosen core value for the batch: “LEARNING COMMUNITY: “We learn from our experiences and we become smarter.”, I can say that - “Life is a non-stop learning experience”

There are no easy things in life, everything requires sacrifice. It’s not possible to have everything go on your way all the time. The world does not revolve around one person. We have to consider the consequences of everything we do and say to others. With the guidance of the Lord, we can make better decisions.

My melancholic-phlegmatic temperament has helped me understand the feelings of others. I’ve learned to improve my self through appreciating my strengths and figuring out my weaknesses. I wish everyone has an open mind so we can all accept our differences. In that way, we can be more sensitive about the feelings of others and we can avoid hurting each other. Though I have a melancholic-phlegmatic temperament, I also want to have and develop the good qualities of all the 4 temperaments so I can become a better person.

The 419 scam: EXPECTING YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE

OK, so here I go again. I just received another scam letter on my email last night April 8, 2009.

I am talking about the "419" scam which uses EXPECTING YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE as the title in their message. The so-called 419 scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa.

They promised a large amount of money such as inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, or winning a jackpot, etc. But, in reality, victims do not receive any money. They are the ones who are asked to pay. While, the culprit will not reveal his or her real identity.

They either use or invent different addresses, names of real people, and real companies who have no connection to the scammers. They also use different email addresses such as:

I am Mr.ZUFAR IBRAHIM. The bill and exchange manager at the foreign remittance department of bank of Africa. I got your contact from the internet, while searching for an honest and trust worthy person, who will assist me to implement this transfer discovered the sum of Seven million and four hundred thousand united states dollars (us$7,400, 000.00)belonging to a deceased customer of this bank. The fund has been lying in a suspense account without anybody coming to put claim over the money since the account owner late Mr Hussein Mubarak from Kuwait who was involved in the December 25th 2003 Benin plane crash The said fund is now ready for transfer to a foreign account whose owner will be portrayed as the beneficiary and next of kin to the deceased customer of the bank. since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless somebody applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidelines and laws but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim. It is therefore upon this discovery that I decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and I don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill. The banking law and guideline here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after Six years, the money will be transferred into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occasioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe cannot stand as next of kin to a foreigner.

I therefore am soliciting for your assistance to come forward as the next of kin. I have agreed that 40% of this money will be for you as the beneficiary in respect of the provision of your account and services rendered, 50% would be for me while 10% will be for expenses incurred during the cause of this transaction if the money is transferred to your account from bank of africa, I and my family in this transaction will proceed immediately to your country for our own share of the money. I expect you to keep this business strictly confidential and secret as you may wish to know that I am a bank official. Moreover, be rest assured that this business is 100% risk free on both side and every arrangement to transfer this money to the account you are going to provide have been concluded provided we maintain the confidentiality and secret involved. The man in the picture is Naseer Somro, the second tallest man on earth. He is standing 7 ft. and 8 in. I spotted him at Market Market Mall. There were so many people who wants to have their pictures taken with this man.

The tallest man recorded in the Guinness Book of Records is (Bao) Xi Shun standing 8 ft. and 2 in. But today, there's a man named Leonid Stadnik, who claims to be the new tallest man on earth, according to his doctor, he stands 8 ft. and 5 in. On the other hand, Craig Glenday (the Editor-In-Chief of Guinness World Records) says they have to measure the height of Stadnik first before they record him in the book as the new tallest man.

I love to draw in Nero-Paint

Since I was a kid, I really love to draw. According to my mom, I draw better when I was young, but it's always monsters. Maybe I was just influenced by the images I saw from the comic book which my aunt (father side) brought home whenever she spends her vacation in our place.

I will never forget the time my mom torn my drawing and threw it in the trash can. I cried terribly though I can't remember what I did wrong. My mom told me she didn't want me to draw beasts and monster. She said I should draw angels. From then on, I find myself drawing nude images with wings.

I am fond of looking for the best and unique layouts on friendster. I wish I can make my own layouts but it's just not my thing. Instead of learning to create layouts, I decided to make personalized comments for my friends whenever they have their birthdays. Then, I was inspired to make my own comments for different occassions.

Nero-Paint is the term I use for Nero photoshop and Paint.

Believe it or not. I made these comments using paint and nero-photoshop.

The adobe photoshop I used expired after 30 day tutorial.

I am more expert using paint and nero photoshop than adobe.

However, I made the above photo (collection of my works) using imageready photoshop.

This is my assignment for Christian Spirituality Class

I. Who am I?

I am a very quiet college student who prefers to be alone most of the time rather than go shopping with my friends. I am very close to my family. People see me as a very kind person but I know that what they don’t like about me is when I get mad easily over small matters. I really don’t like to be laugh at by people, if they do I really get mad but I don’t show my real feelings in front of them. Even though I’m not perfect, as they believed they are, I still don’t deserve to be an object of ridicule. I believe that people should treat other people as they want to be treated, that’s why I find it unfair when I do good things to others yet they do bad things to me.

II. Where am I in my life right now? (what shape is my life in right now?)

Right now, I am in the stage of development as a mature person. I need to learn more about life so I can become a better person. Graduation is fast approaching and I really have to decide on my own after that. I have to stop depending on my parents.

III. What do I expect for this Class?

I am expecting to learn more about spirituality. I am known as the most discipline student since elementary but people don’t know that I can make bad things sometimes like arguing with my parents over small matters and not listening to what they tell me. In this class, I want to understand what a person goes through in terms of spirituality. I want to become a better person through the lessons I will learn in this course.

IV. What do I want to happen?

In my life, I want to become a better person and learn to decide on my own without depending on my parents. I want to be more responsible on my actions.

Through this course, I want to develop myself in terms of spirituality.

V. Discuss lessons from Theology class:

1. Salvation History

What I remember is when Jesus saved the humanity from sins through giving his life. He was nailed on the cross for the sake of everyone. We should consider what God sacrificed for us. We have to stop doing bad things; we should learn to appreciate everything that God have given us.

2. Christology

God went on earth and become a human being to show us the right way of living righteously. If we live that way, we will have a good life. We should live righteously like Jesus of Nazareth; it doesn’t mean we have to be nailed on the cross just to prove that we regret what we did. What we have to do is to do good things to other people without asking for something in return.

3. Sacraments

We should follow the teachings of God. The rules are made for us so we can live peacefully and orderly.

4. Church (Ecclesiology)

We have to understand that the church was built for the community who believes in God. It is not there just for decoration. It’s for us.

5. Marriage and Family life

This subject was taught to students, for us to be aware about the life of having a family. Before marriage, we should be prepared for the consequences. We should accept our spouse for who they are. If they are the kind of people who do bad things, we should teach them how to live righteously.

6. Moral Theology

It’s sad to think that the cultures of other countries are really not moral. There are some countries that eat fetus soup. Fetus soup is made of a soup and a human fetus (product of abortion).

As human beings, we should know what’s right or wrong. Until now, I still can’t accept the fact that there are countries who serves fetus soup in restaurant. We should respect each other. The human body is not made for human consumption; it’s the kingdom of God. Our responsibility is to praise God and take good care of our planet as well as the people who lived here.

This is my work for Practical criticism when our prof asked us to read and relate on The Existence of God and History of Criticism.

I. The existence of God

As Christians, people believed in the existence of God because it is what they learned since childhood. But as Science tells us, there is no proof that God really existed since no one has ever seen him in this day and age. On the other hand, the existence of all life on earth and the heavens have made the people realized that it is impossible that these species evolved just by accident, a supreme being (God) must have created them. The composition of these species is very complex, they had to come into being exactly as they are, they cannot be simplified. Only a supreme being can create such wonderful species, thus, God really exist.

II. The History of Criticism

1. Tragedy

It is something a person does not want to happen. What I consider a tragedy in my life is when my mom had a miscarriage, me and my sister was really excited to have a new baby in the family, but it didn’t happen.

2. Myth

It is something a group of people believed to have a negative or positive consequence in the future, based on their actions at the present. In our family, we believed that whatever we do to our parents today will also happen to us when we become parents in the future.

3. Narrative

It is a true story shared to others. Everyday, I prepare the things I need to bring to school for the next day, I ride two tricycles and one fx or jeepney on my way to school.

4. Rhetoric

It persuades people to do something. It is better to bring an umbrella whether it’s raining or not, I’m getting a hard time commuting on my way home whenever I forgot my umbrella on rainy days.

5. Semiotics

It is about signs and symbols which represents a thing or an idea in order to remind people of what they need to do. During class discussions, I take down notes quickly, sometimes instead of writing the exact words that my professor tell us, I make a symbol to represent it so I can understand it better.

6. Structuralism

It refers to the composition of a certain thing. Everyday, I save my allowance in order to have enough money and buy the things I need for school.

7. Deconstruction

It means to destroy something. Sometimes, when I read my thesis, I omit some parts which are not helpful for my study.

8. Annihilation

It simply means to reduce something to nothing. When I have a project, I do it little by little every single day so when the time for deadline comes, I have nothing else to do but to submit it to my professor.

9. Fundamentalism

It is a relatively new brand of Protestantism. My mom is a protestant and my father is a Catholic, but they respect each other’s beliefs regarding their religion.

10. Illusion

It is an imaginary situation a person desires to become reality. When I was younger, I imagined that the cartoon characters I saw on TV were real.

A Novel Analysis - “The Tree”

This is a Novel Analysis I made for Philippine Literature in second year college. The Tree is a Novel written by Sionil Jose.

"The Tree” is the story about a boy, (whose name was not mentioned in the book), dealing with the unpleasant memories in his life - the loss of his love ones and the other important people in his life – his friends, cousins, uncles and aunts and, most of all, his father. He still remembers everything, as if it was just yesterday. He was born in Rosales, where a Balete tree stands beside their house. The people believe that this giant tree was endowed with Talisman. His father is looked up to by everyone in their town for he worked for Don Vicente. His mother died when he was born. He knows that she was beautiful and also kind as described by Sepa, and the other servants. Her portrait which was painted by Cousin Marcelo, was lifelike. The boy still remembers his first visit on his mother’s grave, he was five or six years old then, it was the first time he saw his father cried. That only proves how much the latter love the boy’s mother whom he called Nena.

When the boy’s father died, he realized how much his father loved him and that he wants the best for his son.

The Characters
• The boy – the protagonist in the story, (his name was not mentioned in the story). He is a kind type of person but is afraid to do what he has to do.

• The boy’s father - He is the boy’s father. He worked for Don Vicente and is respected in their town. He is a good person but he makes tough decisions.

• Nena – the boy’s mother, who passed away after giving birth to his son, she was a very beautiful woman and also kind as described by the servants.

• Don Vicente – the wealthiest landlord in their town and to whom the boy’s father worked.

• Tio Baldo – one of the help; he was bright. He stands for what he believes in.

• Chan Hai – a Chinese merchant who loves to play chess with the boy’s father.

• Old David – the one who took care of the horses and the calesa; he could not read nor write.

• Marcelo –the youngest brother of the boy’s father; He was past thirty and he wore his hair unduly long when it was not fashionable to do so. Though he was pleasant and reliable to some extent, had long been regarded as “the problem” in the family because they considered him unstable. He was an artist; he knew how to capture nuance in a person’s face.

• Sepa – the cook; past fifty and stout like a pampered sow, she could not read nor write just like Old David.

• Tio Benito – a very religious person.

• Pedring – the boy’s cousin on his father side, Clarissa’s husband; a handsome and fair young man.

• Clarissa – the boy’s cousin on his mother’s side, Pedring’s husband.

• The boy’s Grandfather – active old man; superstitious.

• Tomas – the old alcolyte, past sixty and a little hard of hearing.

• Padre Andong – catholic priest. He was a short bulky man in his seventies.

• Tio Doro – an elementary school teacher, alive with ideas; among the boy’s uncles, it was only he who devoted the best years of his life to politics because of his nationalistic passions. He never trusted foreigners.

• Cousin Andring – Tia Antonia’s son; the perennial jester.

• Angel – one of the houseboys.

• Ludovico – A tall, gangling youth with eyes that gave the impression he was sleepy all the time. He seldom talked, though, and when he did, he seemed always to be groping for the proper words to say. He was dark like most of the other barrio boys who had known no education except the practical kind that one absorbed after knowing hunger quite early in the villages and endless drudgery that want with being a tenant. He is a true person, he shows what he really feels.

• Teresita – a stubborn girl with many fixed ideas; the boy’s love interest.

• Martina – the prettiest servant in the house.

• Hilda – a girl about the boy’s age, a tightrope artist.

• Tia Antonia – Andring’s mother

• Feliza – Ludovico’s mother, a thin little woman who always spoke in a whisper, whose face was as pale as a banana stalk. She was very industrious – this much could be seen in the way she swept the sacastorehouse or the yard so thoroughly whenever father asked her.
Mr. Alfariz – the councilor from the market district.

The Setting:

• Rosales

– the place where the boy was born and grew up; the place where the wedding ceremony of Pedring and Clarissa was held.

• Paniqui – the place where the train got late and a thousand people dispersed and Don Vicente would have been put to shame had not father ridden in great haste out to Carmay and the other barrios, asking the people to return.

• Cemetery – when the boy, with his father, visited the grave of his mother. It was the first time the boy saw his father cry. It was also the same place where the boy‘s father was buried and visited by his father’s woman.

• Carmay – the place where the boy’s grandfather was born, where he grew, and where he worked and saved enough not only to buy out his other neighbors’ farms but also to send all his children to college, so that they would not be farmers like him; The place where the wedding of Pedring and Clarissa was celebrated.

• Delta – the place where the boy and his father goes hunting, it is where the Japanese first occupied.

Analysis of the Novel

A. Literary Analysis

1. Characters

2. Plot

Exposition:

The boy’s father is looked up to by everyone in their town for he worked for Don Vicente. His first visit on his mother’s grave was the first time he saw his father cried. The boy met a tightrope artist, Hilda, they became friends. But the girl died when she was twelve years old. The boy blames himself for what happened.

Conflict: Benito, came after his ten years in America. He and his Tia Antonia were always arguing about his paganism. Benito was very religious before he got to America, but he was now influenced by the western people. However, after half a year in the Philippines, he has returned to his own self and married a very wealthy woman.

Rising action: The boy’s grandfather, and his friend, Ludovico died.

Climax: The boy discovered that his father was having an affair with a woman. Baldo commit suicide when he had lost the trust of the tenants. The boy fell in love with his classmate, Teresita.

Denouement: The Japanese invaders came to the Philippines and first occupied the Delta. The boy’s father had surrendered some of their stuff; his uncle, Doro, was harmed by the Japanese soldiers and got sick; he passed away. After the war, the HUK fought their landlords and the Army. The boy remembers the house boy, Angel, also his friend. He lives the town, after the boy’s father whipped him because of not watering the plants which are planted by Nena. He forgot to do so, because he wonders how his parents both die. Then June, the boy was college at last. Until October, he discovered that his father was killed by kidnappers. He returned to Rosales. He also discovered there that Teresita died of family disease. He was really heartbroken, but, he just accepted the fact.
Falling action: After visiting his father’s grave, he approached his father’s woman. The woman said that his father really loved him so much but the boy doesn’t.

End: The boy lives Rosales, and learned to stand on his own. He began to accept the things that happened in the past. Now, he became a better person. He never lose hope in everything.

3. Setting: During the Japanese occupation in the Philippines.

Sociological Analysis
The poor people seemed left out from the rich people who treated them unjustly. The rich people lived in luxury while the poor in misery. When it comes to burial, the poor people’s body would not be given a nice coffin. People hinder the phase of love between the rich and the poor. Religion is becoming the opium of the world, it cause misunderstanding. Racial discrimination is also occurring.

Theological Analysis
In Rosales, a balete tree stands in the middle of the town. People believe that this giant tree was endowed with Talisman. There would be offerings at its base, when the harvest was good, and when someone got sick.
The 9th day of the burial of the dead is celebrated with dining and drinking, depending on the finances of the bereaved family.

B. The image of the woman as portrayed in the novel

Hardworking

– the boy can see some women in the river washing their dirty clothes. The female servants in the house were really industrious; they never get tired on doing the household chores.

Motherhood – the boy noticed how Feliza, Ludovico’s mother, works so hard for her family that she almost die.
Some women, like Clarissa, are being fooled, especially when it comes to receiving love letters. In the story, the boy followed his father’s instructions, not to give Clarissa the letters from her boyfriend in Cebu.
The boy approached his father’s woman and realized that she knows his father more than he does. The woman knows that she is not the legal wife but she still loves the boy’s father. She was the one who listens to his sentiments.

Conclusion
The story was entitled as “the tree” because it relates the tree to the ability of a person in facing hardships. Though, many unpleasant things happened, one shouldn’t surrender his life. As long as a person lives, he can do something to solve his problems. In the story, the boy learns to accept the unpleasant things that happened in his life. He also realized that his father just wants the best for him.

Concubinage

I wrote this last September 20, 2008

I've just watched XXX today. The topic is about concubinage or "pagtataksil" (adultery). There are 3 cases, one with an unfaithful husband, another one is about a school service and lastly, the unfaithful wife.
Unfaithful husband
A woman married to his husband for 26 years, and had 6 children discovered her husband is having an affair with a GRO. The man didn't deny it, instead, he threatened his wife not to do anything about it or else he will kill her. To protect his wrongdoings, he spread a rumour that his wife is insane.
The man and the GRO are living in the same house, with the GRO's siblings. The unfaithful man just goes home to his real family whenever he needs money. He makes his children work.
The School Service
Every morning, a mysterious school service stopped near a canteen in one village. The people noticed it's always shaking until they discovered that something inapropriate is happening inside the vehicle. A man and a woman are making love inside the school service. This is a public scandal, there are children who can see what they are doing.
To make matters worst, XXX discovered the couples each have their own family. It is clear they committed adultery in a public place. Their real families don't know anything about it until XXX revealed it to them.
Unfaithful wife
This is really disgusting. A man discovered his wife having an affair with his cousin. He decided to file a case against his wife but before that he should have enough evidence to testify in court. He then puts a surveillance camera in their roof to videotape his wife and his cousin making love.

XXX helped the complainants to file a case against their husbands and wives.
According to the law a man proven guilty of committing adultery can be imprisoned for only 4 years. While if a woman commits adultery, she will be imprisoned for 6 years.
Although there are just 2 years difference,it is still a big deal. This shows the patriarchal society we have in terms of committing adultery.
It is unfair that men are given consideration for womanizing just because they have less control about these things. While women have more control of themselves compared to men.
The law should make it fair for both men and women. A woman is not capable of having an affair with multiple partners. While men are more capable of having an affair with dozens of women. (what i mean here is the capacity to make love to different people)

Reflection on SEXUALITY

Sexuality is a very important aspect of our life and we should take care of it. I don’t like to wear any type of revealing clothes. It’s alright to wear sexy clothes, but not to the point that you would be mistaken as a prostitute, I am concerned about my health. I am very conservative, I have no boyfriend and I have no sexual experience. I am against pre-marital sex.If I would involve myself in pre-marital sex, my life would be miserable. The guy I am living with has the right to cheat and he can leave me anytime he wants, even if we already have our own children. We all know that even married people face these kinds of situation Then, if my partner won't leave me; it doesn’t mean he won’t give me AIDS..In addition to that, the guy has the right to hurt me and our future children. In this case, there is a chance that the children will grow as bad guys because of their miserable childhood. PMS,would not only cause a lot of problem to me and my family, it can also affect other people as well. Most people today think of sex as pleasure rather than a wonderful gift of God. Instead of Love, they commit themselves to others because of lust. It seems like a faithful guy does not exist anymore. Sex is supposed to be for a married couple, in order to have children of their own. It’s not for mistress, fun, rape, etc.

GENWORLD

I've just deleted my original blog and I've decided to make a new one. I will post here the things I posted in my previous blog. Here is the first one. I wrote this last August 22, 2008.

This is the first time I’ll be writing on a blog. I was inspired by my intelligent friend in Assumption. We are classmates and her thoughts are really awesome. While thinking of what to write in my blog. I suddenly thought of searching my name on google and I find my work about the community service we had in Habitat for Humanity at FTI, Taguig (actually, I live in FTI). It was posted in the multiply account of Habitat for Humanity.

It surprised me since I don’t have a copy of my work. I accidentally remove it from the computer when it got infected by the virus.

Well, here’s a copy of my reflection on my NSTP.

My Habitat Experience - Genevieve Ann Gonzales (Assumption College)

My experience for this project is worth remembering. It’s not only the hard work which is fulfilling but also the bonding me and my classmates had. We learned that teamwork is very important in accomplishing something big. The dedication we had is what keeps us going on long hours of work. Even though we are tired from school due to a whole week of school works, we always find time for habitat to finish our community service.

I realize that house building is not that easy. Every small detail is important and is done strictly. One mistake would ruin the whole project. Every element is made with discipline and dedication. Now, I know what a construction worker goes through whenever he builds a house. A whole day under the hot rays of the sun, carrying heavy loads of blocks back and forth, the experience of mosquito bite, and the agility in putting up and assembling each element needed in their appropriate places.

But the exhaustion is changed into a feeling of fulfillment. The fact that we are able to help others through house building is a gratification in our part. We have proven to ourselves that we can do something for the community. We learned the importance of time and we learned to manage our schedules. We also realize that by helping each other, we can finish the job earlier.

We met lots of new friends, the construction workers and the Japanese volunteers. We all did a great job. Every time a certain task is finished, we feel satisfied. The whole experience with habitat is a joyful experience. I never thought that community service can be this fun

I really mean what I wrote here. It’s really fun and fulfilling.
